This is a sneak peek into a full conversation with guest and friend, Joanna Moss, airing later this Fall~which is actually supported by a lot of research in positive psychology.

When we talk about happiness and unhappiness as two separate dials instead of a single spectrum, what we’re really acknowledging is:

🌿 They can co-exist. You can feel joy and grief, gratitude and frustration, love and fear — all at the same time. Life isn’t linear.

🎛️ They operate independently. Turning up the “happiness” dial (for example, through meaningful connections or small daily joys) doesn’t automatically turn down the “unhappiness” dial (like stress, loss, or anxiety).

🧭 This gives more emotional range. Instead of trying to eliminate unhappiness to “get to” happiness, we can hold both — allowing for a more honest and resilient emotional life.

🫀 It’s more human. Real well-being often involves holding complexity — like feeling grateful for your kids while also feeling exhausted, or proud of a milestone while mourning something else.

👉 In short: happiness isn’t the absence of unhappiness; it’s often the ability to feel both and still move forward with intention.
